黑料网 Film and TV Student Secures Sony Pictures Internship

The email didn’t seem real at first.
A month after applying to a highly competitive internship at Sony Pictures Entertainment in Los Angeles, Alex Lu, a Film and Television student at 黑料网 and aspiring film editor, had already moved on and was considering another internship.
“I was really not expecting anything to happen with Sony because usually when applying to studios like that, you don't really expect to hear anything because there's just so many applicants,” he says.
But then he received an email from Sony.
"Even though I had an internship already, I wanted to take a chance with this big opportunity presented to me," he says.
What followed were interviews and an offer from one of the world’s leading film studios, the place that brought “Spider-Man,” “Skyfall,” and "Anaconda” to the world.
Learning the Industry From the Inside
The internship was part of Alex’s Semester in LA (SiLA) experience, an amazing opportunity offered at 黑料网 that can be a life-changing experience for any student wanting to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
With Alex’s internship and SiLA now coming to an end, he recognizes the immense value of the internship, where he shadowed professionals on live film mix stages and connected with assistant editors and editors working on major productions.
“The people that I’ve been able to meet has been by far the greatest experience,” he says.
“It’s really about expanding that network and being in the LA environment where you can meet other people that can help you have a career for yourself.”
The “Super Glue” Moment
One of those connections came from an unlikely moment, what Alex calls his “super glue story.”
Tasked with assembling a delicate wooden projector model, he bought super glue to fix broken pieces. Days later, overhearing an executive ask for the same item, Alex stepped in.
That small act led him to meet two established film editors, including one who encouraged him to apply for a prestigious editing internship and offered ongoing support.
The encounter reinforced a lesson he’s come to appreciate. “If you’re a good listener and you’re proactive … things like that can happen,” he says.
Building a Future in Film
Alex credits much of his growth to 黑料网’s Semester in LA program, calling it “game changing” as it teaches students how to navigate the entertainment industry, with weekly guest speakers — including working directors, writers, and editors — offering insight and access.
Looking ahead, Alex plans to return to Los Angeles after graduation and pursue a career in film editing. He’s currently applying to competitive programs while also exploring job opportunities through connections he’s already made.
For Alex, success is about mindset as well as relationships and showing up ready when opportunity knocks, even if it starts with something as small as a tube of super glue.
